La Via Campesina on the Global Political Context

La Via Campesina (Bagnolet, France)

Solidarity liberates. It is a liberatory tool. And LVC is a space of liberation. Decolonization is not a metaphor. We will not be liberated by saying please, by being the perfect victim. We will be liberated by standing in solidarity with the peoples of the world, through dismantling settler colonialism. And how do we do this? We continue bringing the pressure. We feel it from Palestine. It is working.

Venezuela: Politics of the Commons

Reinaldo Iturriza López / Venezuelanalysis (Caracas)

Viswa Nathan / Asia Sentinel (Sacramento)

The Philippine government and the country’s communist insurgents have agreed to restart peace negotiations after a six-year hiatus, with the goal of finally bringing their decades-long conflict to an end. High-ranking delegations from Manila and the communist National Democratic Front of the Philippines agreed to a “common vision for peace,” Norway’s Foreign Ministry announced.

Zimbabwe’s Third Generation Feminists

Chido Nyaruwata / African Arguments (London)

The Zimbabwe women’s rights movement is built on coalitions between different women’s groups and activists. The younger generation of activists encourage cross-agenda activism with strong collaborations between young women’s rights activists. Is the Ground Shifting for Myanmar and China?

Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury / The Economic Times (Mumbai)

In a rare rally in Myanmar since a sweeping crackdown on dissent, dozens of nationalist protesters gathered outside the Chinese Embassy in the main city of Yangon with banners and posters critical of Beijing. "We request China government don't support northern terrorist groups," read one of their posters, in English.

Panama’s Environmentalist Awakening

Francisco Javier Bonilla / NACLA Report (New York)

The Canadian-owned mine at the center of a national uprising will be shut down. But differing environmentalisms in the isthmus may now be on a collision course against one another.

__________
Basque Country General Strike

Jule Goikoetxea / Jacobin (New York)

On Thursday, trade unions and women’s movements across Spain’s Basque Country held an explicitly feminist general strike. Workers are striking for a public community care system — one that ensures care work is well-paid and properly supported.
