Voting is absolutely critical for democracy. But at the end of the day, stopping a coup attempt will depend on far more than the ballot, and will require creative and courageous acts of civic and political engagement from all of us.

While keeping people focused on a strong, robust election process is a must, we also need to prepare for a coup.
If the vote is close, Donald Trump could easily throw the election into chaos and subvert the result. Who will stop him? Let us not hedge about one thing. Donald Trump may win or lose, but he will never concede.

The commander of Bolivia’s armed forces General Williams Kaliman—trained by the U.S. military—“suggested” that Morales resign. Morales offered a re-election. It was rejected in place of a coup. There has been no election in Bolivia since the coup.
